Seeds of Peace is a summer camp unlike any other. For the last 20 years, this amazing organization has brought together over four thousand 14 to 16-year-old future leaders from conflicting nations, particularly in the Middle East, for three weeks of canoeing, campfires, and, most importantly, crushing barriers to foster peace and understanding between people who have been taught all their lives to hate each other. Leslie runs the whole shebang…

“Proactively building good communication is critical—you never want to be playing catch-up to explain things that could have been disseminated earlier. In a crisis situation, we are engaging people in the process, the solution, and the steps that need to be taken in order to create that solution. Getting their buy-in fast is key.

“It’s my job to make the final decision, but getting input from people is very important—even if it’s not input that I agree with. Sometimes I have to say, ‘Let’s take a step back here. What is it that we’re really about? I hear what you’re saying, that you prefer it a different way, but for now you’re going to have to trust me.’ When we don’t see eye-to-eye, that foundation of trust is critical.”
